Crude copper (containing 99% copper) was made into thick plate as anode, pure copper as cathode, and the mixture of sulfuric acid and copper sulfate as electrolyte. After electrification, copper dissolves from the anode into copper ion (Cu) and moves to the cathode. After reaching the cathode, electrons are obtained and pure copper (also known as electrolytic copper) is precipitated in the cathode. Impurities in crude copper, such as iron and zinc, which are more active than copper, will dissolve into ions (Zn and Fe) with copper. Because these ions are not easy to precipitate compared with copper ions, these ions can be prevented from precipitating on the cathode as long as the potential difference is adjusted properly during electrolysis. Impurities such as gold and silver, which are inactive than copper, are deposited at the bottom of the electrolyzer. The Chemcial Reaction
The electrolytic copper can be further processed into very fine electrolytic copper powder.
The principle of copper electrolysis refining is as follows:
Anode reaction :Cu - 2e = Cu
Me - 2 e = Me
H2O minus 2e is equal to 2H plus 1/2 o2
SO4 minus 2e is equal to SO3 plus 1/2 o2
